Art and design work by Springfield, Illinois artist Chris Umhoefer

This detailed artistic T-shirt brings out the energy of Lincoln's Springfield years using colors from his home state of Illinois - blue and orange - and a hand-drawn portrait of young Mr. Lincoln.

The colorful portrait of Lincoln on this shirt is based on the earliest known photo of Abraham Lincoln, taken in 1846, when Lincoln was 37 years old. He did not have a beard at this time and would not grow one until 1860, during his run for the Presidency. In 1846, Lincoln was living some of the best years of his life in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. He had married his wife Mary Todd about 4 years prior, and was running for a U.S. House seat which he would later win that year - the only federal office he would hold until his election to the Presidency in 1860. He had purchased a home at Eighth and Jackson streets near the downtown of the fast-growing city of Springfield, and his first two sons, Robert and Eddie, had been born. The tragedies and troubles of the Civil War and the later deaths of his two sons Eddie and Willie were still far away.

I used two different shades of blue and one shade of orange - colors that represent Illinois, the Land of Lincoln - and hand-drawn lines to carefully create the portrait of Lincoln on this T-shirt and capture the energy of Lincoln's younger years. The colored lines in the background represent areas where the original 1846 negative was scratched; rather than remove the imperfections, I decided to keep them and use them to add to the vibrant, colorful, energetic look of this shirt. Once I was finished with the portrait I added his signature and the text "The Young Springfieldian" to the bottom of the shirt to represent where he was in his life at this point in time.

The design is screen printed onto a soft, black, 100% cotton, made-in-the-USA American Apparel unisex T-shirt. The design fills up the entire front of the shirt - making it a true wearable work of art.

This T-shirt is available in adult small, medium, large, X-large, and 2X-large. It is also available in an 80s color scheme - the original color scheme for this design - in addition to this color scheme. Pictures show adult X-large size T-shirt. T-shirt shown is a sample; you will receive one that has never been worn. These T-shirts tend to run a little smaller than normal; if you're concerned about this, order the next size up.

Washing instructions: Machine wash and rinse inside out, in cold water, in the gentle cycle, with mild detergent. No bleach. Hang dry (recommended) or low/no heat in the dryer if necessary.
